Water, the element of life. Drink ideas that combine water in wise ways are every bit as vital. Near-water drinks have mushroomed over the years as they fulfil the most important consumer demands for natural, light and healthy drinks. Near-water drinks include Flavoured Water, Aqua Plus and Aqua Fruit drinks as well as Fruit Splashes. Countless innovative products provide modern refreshment in a market segment that is constantly being diversified.
Flavoured Water – pure Refreshment and Taste
Flavoured water was introduced to the market in 1990 by Döhler. Today, it is a successful component of the product portfolio in the global markets.
Six billion litres of flavoured water are consumed around the world each year – and the world’s thirst has certainly not been satisfied yet! Combining water with multifaceted fruit flavours and sweeteners, flavoured water offers pure refreshment as well as the foundation for an infinite variety of product variations. While lemon, apple, orange and wild berry have been the most important flavours until now, local fruit flavours such as pear, plum and mirabelle plum are currently being introduced.
The DöhlerGroup recently presented the next generation of flavoured water: “flavour touch” applications, which see the combination of pure water with a hint of natural flavour. Flavour touch products close the gap that separates pure water from sweetened concepts with products with just a hint of flavour, offering light and pure refreshment.
 
Aqua Plus – The Plus of Fruit and Functionality
With Aqua Plus, the added value of a bit of fruit juice and possibly also functional added benefits is right under the spotlight. Due to their neutral base of water or mineral water, Aqua Plus drinks can be combined with many interesting ingredients, from fruit juices to plant or tea extracts and functionals. Aqua Plus drinks are available in many single  flavour variations – from exotic hints of pomegranate, mango, papaya or passion fruit, through to local fruit varieties like pear or grape. Products featuring tea and tea extracts are especially successful at the moment. The polyphenols found in tea are aligned with the trend for products with an antioxidant effect and a significant ORAC value (ORAC= Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity). Whether for sport or for wellness, Aqua Plus drinks offer a variety of positioning options, so that you can choose which one fits your brand image best.
 
Vitamin Water

Vitamin Water have been an established success in the USA – is now starting the trend to take off in Europe. Vitamin Water represent a spirit of the times, perfectly suited to application in Aqua Plus drinks. There has been a switch towards natural product designs in this area in the past few years, enhancing product marketability in Europe. Products can be diversely positioned with attractive flavour combinations and suitable vitamin as well as functional ingredients. The spectrum of positioning possibilities bring many more marketing options, for example “relax”, “vitality” or “protect” concepts.
 
Aqua Fruit – A Natural, Healthy Fruit Sensation
Aqua Fruit drinks close the divide between Aqua Plus drinks and Fruit Splashes. Containing 10-30% juice and only 20 calories, they are a light and healthy alternative to classic carbonated soft drinks. Attention to naturalness is the focus of Aqua Fruit drinks. There is a clear preference for no preservatives or artificial colours. In addition, neutralised and decolourised apple juice concentrates, which the DöhlerGroup offers under the MultiSweet® Fruit brand name, lend these concepts a natural sweetness. For this reason, products will be able to claim “no added sugar” under forthcoming EU legislation.
 
Fruit Splashes – Refreshing The New Impulse Demand

Fruit Splashes represent a beverage category that fulfils the consumer demand for exceptionally natural products. With a combination of pure fruit juice (about 50–70%) and carbonated mineral water, Fruit Splashes are a healthy, light and natural alternative to carbonated soft drinks. These concepts are also a very good drink choice for children, especially with broadly appealing fruit flavours such as strawberry, raspberry and banana.
It's no longer all about new flavours in the fruit splash market, but much more about new formats and themes, such as ‘mild fruit splashes’ and ‘garden splashes’. With a combination of local garden fruits, garden splashes are currently breathing new life into the market.
Mild fruit splashes also show large potential for growth. For the mild fruit splashes, fruit varieties with low pH values are used from the start, for example banana and pears, or even de-acidified apple fruit juice concentrates. Thanks to the low acid content, these fruit splashes are kind to the stomach and taste a little sweeter. These beverages are therefore especially suitable for positioning to the target groups of best agers and children. 
The trend towards calorie-reduced beverages has also reached the fruit splash market. The DöhlerGroup has developed many applications for light fruit splashes, which offer the benefits of lighter enjoyment and plenty of freshness.
