OFS Agar and SSL Broth
Reliable detection of beverage-spoiling microorganisms
Yeasts, in particular fermentable yeasts, moulds, lactic and acetic acid bacteria, are among the most common product-spoiling microorganisms in non-alcoholic beverages such as soft drinks, beverages containing fruit juice, tea drinks etc., but also in acidic mixes with beer, wine or milk.
OFS Agar (orange serum agar) is a ready-to-use agar medium for the quantitative detection of mesophilic and acidophilic microorganisms in beverages (pH values < 4.3) or rinse waters. Instead of powders, Döhler uses real orange juice concentrate to achieve the ideal nutrient composition for fast growth. In addition to the low pH value of 5.0, the citrus essences and oils contained in the medium inhibit irrelevant accompanying flora.
SSL Broth was developed by Döhler as a ready-to-use liquid medium. It can be used for the partially selective pre-enrichment of large sample volumes or samples which cannot be filtered using a membrane, thereby enabling even trace amounts of contamination to be detected.
The combination of pre-enrichment using SSL and a subsequent pour plate with OFS is one of the most reliable methods with the highest degree of safety when it comes to analysing microbiologically sensitive beverages and raw materials, such as fruit juice concentrates and preparations (e.g. osmophilic yeasts).
